Heartburn & Acid Reflux Treatment Options
at TLC Houston's Heartburn Center

Heartburn, adid reflux, and GERD treatments can range from lifestyle changes to medication to minimally invasive medical procedures. All options aim to treat the source of the symptoms and reduce acid reflux and heartburn. Our heartburn specialist will be able to recommend which treatments might be best for you.

Lifestyle Changes

There are several lifestyle changes that can be effective GERD treatments, including dietary changes. It is often recommended that patients try changes to diet and lifestyle as the first step to addressing acid reflux and GERD symptoms. Many patients seek out other treatments in addition to lifestyle changes. Read more about the lifestyle changes that can help reduce acid reflux.

Medications

The medications that best treat GERD are medications for heartburn and acid reflux treatment. These medications can neutralize or decrease stomach acid or can strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that prevents acid from backing up into the esophagus. LINX® System

The LINX® Reflux Management System is a minimally invasive GERD treatment and is often an option for patients who are no longer responding to medication. The LINX® system is a laparoscopic procedure to prevent acid reflux. The LINX® procedure uses a ring of flexible magnets placed around the esophagus which opens to allow food and liquids in the stomach and closes to prevent acid from going back up the esophagus.

TIF Procedure

The Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication, or TIF, is a heartburn treatment that does not require incisions. Performed through the mouth, the procedure replaces the anti-reflux valve in order to prevent food and liquid from moving back up the esophagus.

Hiatal Hernia Repair

The successful repair of a hiatal hernia can be an effective acid reflux treatment. A hiatal hernia is caused by part of the stomach pushing up through the hiatus, an opening in the diaphragm. The hiatal hernia is repaired by narrowing the opening of the diaphragm by stitches.

Laparoscopic Fundoplication

This procedure is considered the standard surgical treatment for severe heartburn, or GERD. It reinforces the lower esophageal sphincter, which is located at the end of the esophagus, so stomach acid cannot reflux into the esophagus.
